Op-Eds
Sunday, July 30, 2006 It is Time to Achieve Real Energy Independence
In Maryland, the price of a regular gallon of gas has risen 67 cents in the last year. The cost of a barrel of oil has increased from $30 when President Bush took office to near $80 today. Many Southern Marylanders that commute to Washington DC are spending hundreds of dollars a month on gasoline alone. Meanwhile, we continue to rely on foreign nations for the majority of our oil supply, many in the increasingly unstable Middle East region. It is past due time for Congress to address this crisis with energy independence legislation.

Sunday, April 30, 2006 The Energy Crisis: A Failure of Leadership
While driving the roads of Southern Maryland, you will inevitably notice the recent spike in gas prices. They are high and rising, squeezing the pocketbooks of the average Maryland family. This week families are paying $3.00 a gallon on average for regular gasoline -- double the cost when President Bush took office, and up nearly 70 cents a gallon in the last seven weeks.
Saturday, April 22, 2006 Earth Day a Reminder to Invest in Our Environment
On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day, 25 million people joined around the country to demand a safer, cleaner and healthier world. The impact of that first Earth Day was astonishing. In rapid succession, and with large, bipartisan majorities, Congress passed the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and the Superfund Act.

On Wednesday, I joined House and Senate Democrats in unveiling our national security agenda, “Real Security: The Democratic Plan to Protect America and Restore Our Leadership in the World.” Many of the policy proposals in that document are included in a similar national security strategy I released last September with other House Democrats.
Sunday, February 12, 2006 Bush Budget Another Example of Misguided Priorities
In five years, the Bush Administration has turned record budget surpluses into deficits as far as the eye can see, including a projected deficit of $354 billion next year. Deficits are not merely arbitrary numbers; they have a real effect on the ability of Maryland families to meet future challenges.

Friday, June 24, 2005 America Needs a Real Energy Strategy to Strengthen America’s National Security
Last week, the President visited Calvert County to tour Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant. As a strong supporter of Calvert Cliffs, and a proponent of nuclear power, I am pleased that the President was able to tour this facility. However, I am deeply disappointed that he has failed to lead our country toward energy independence by establishing a real, forward looking energy policy.
